The Montessori Elementary Programme, as prescribed by the Association
Montessori Internationale (AMI), is a natural extension of the Montessori
Primary Programme.
The students are grouped into classes of Lower Elementary (six to nine
year olds) and Upper Elementary (nine to twelve year olds).
Lower Elementary students make extensive use of the Montessori didactic
materials working from the concrete experience which leads to abstraction
and memorization.
Upper Elementary students show a sound understanding of concepts and
have acquired basic skills. They do independent research and study and
often visit such local facilities as libraries and museums as a logical
extension of classroom work.
Students are introduced to new work possibilities daily by their teachers
and they choose areas of interest for in-depth study. Experience shows
that the children learn best when pursuing their own interests.
Independence, responsibility, industry, self-confidence, and self motivation
are the qualities of the most successful Montessori children. These
qualities start to develop in the Montessori Primary class and continue
to grow from ages six through twelve.
