Heritage House Project

2126 Cliff St SW

This page is intended to provide clear, transparent information about Montessori School of Calgary's
acquisition of the Roughton Residence at 2126 Cliff St SW.

We will continue to update this page as the project progresses and as we work closely with
the City of Calgary, Alberta Education, and the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association.

What is the Heritage House project?

The project repurposes a heritage house (2126 Cliff St SW – the Roughton Residence) across from the main campus (2201 Cliff St SW) into administrative and student learning space for Montessori School of Calgary. It is a facility improvement—not an expansion—and will not increase enrolment.

Why is this project necessary?

This project is being undertaken to address a very practical operational challenge. Cliff Bungalow School spaces are fully utilized, and for the past several years have introduced temporary classroom solutions to meet day-to-day operational needs. These classrooms must be fully set up and taken down on a weekly basis. This reduces instructional time, efficiency and stability for staff and students.

The 2126 Cliff St SW project, combined with re-organization of spaces at main campus, will provide a functional, sustainable solution.

Will enrolment numbers increase?

No. Student capacity remains unchanged – we are simply re-configuring spaces.

Will the look of the Roughton Residence change?

No. The exterior character and heritage value of 2126 Cliff St SW are important to both the school and the wider community. No exterior changes or additions are planned.

Any work being completed will be limited to minor interior upgrades only, and only where necessary to meet current building codes, accessibility requirements, and safety standards. The intent is to maintain the overall residential form and unique appearance of the property.

How will traffic and parking be impacted?

No changes are anticipated. Drop-off and pick-up will remain at the main campus, and neighbourhood traffic patterns are expected to stay status quo.

How will student safety be addressed?

We are working with the City of Calgary and the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association on broader safety measures, including improving the crosswalk and potential traffic calming measures.

How will this impact neighbours?

MSofC values being a part of the Cliff Bungalow-Mission community for over 30 years and we are working to ensure this project is approached thoughtfully and respectfully.

We are committed to minimal disruption, with limited daytime noise and short-term construction activity during interior renovations.

How is MSofC working with the City of Calgary and the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association?

We are actively engaging with both the City and CBMCA to ensure this project aligns with neighbourhood priorities, especially around:

  • Pedestrian safety
  • Traffic flow and congestion
  • Heritage preservation

This collaboration is an important part of ensuring the project benefits both the school and the wider community.

How will updates be shared?

Through newsletters, this webpage, open houses, and direct communication as needed.

What are the long-term benefits?

  • Frees up CBMCA shared spaces, improving availability for community use and rentals
  • More stable, efficient use of space for MSofC students, staff, and families
  • Ongoing collaboration with CBMCA on neighbourhood safety
  • Stronger, more sustainable long-term operations
