The Montessori Elementary program is a natural extension of the Primary program. In the Primary program children explore their interests and experience the environment with their senses establishing the ability to choose their own work thus contributing to the desire to complete it on their own. The Elementary program takes these skills to the next level continuing to enable students to move from work to work and group to group with an understanding that they are responsible for their own learning. This is accomplished through small group lessons with students of various ages and one-on-one meetings with their Elementary Teacher on a regular basis to ensure they are exploring their own interests as well as meeting the outcomes expected from the Alberta Curriculum. A Montessori environment provides a rich, self-directed community of learners with each student contributing in a meaningful way on a daily basis. Montessori Elementary students gain a strong sense of self, a high level of self-confidence and an awareness of their peers, the adults in their life and finally their place in the world as contributing members of society.
The Elementary program focuses on the interdependence of all subject areas. These include language, mathematics, physical geometry, history, science, literature, music, drama and physical education. At the same time the Elementary students work on completing and often superseding all of the requirements of the Alberta Education curriculum.
Students are grouped into Lower Elementary (6-9 year olds or grades 1 through 3) and Upper Elementary (9-12 year olds or grades 4 through 6) classes. The Elementary years are a time of ideas, vision and inspiration. Students are introduced to new possibilities every day by their Elementary Teachers and they choose areas of interest for more in-depth study. Research has shown that students learn best when they pursue their own interests. Independence, responsibility, self-confidence and self-motivation are qualities of Montessori-educated students.
